Donald and Rochelle Dahl are a happy addition to the Mitchell community, bringing with them life experience, a deep appreciation for people, and a passion for preserving the heart of small-town America.
Donald and Rochelle met in an unexpected way, at a bar in Auburn, California, called The Amigo Room. Their connection was instant, and just two months and four days later, they were married. That quick decision turned into a lifelong partnership, and today they share a large, close-knit family that includes two children, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Originally, Donald was born in Sacramento, California, and Rochelle in Oakland, California. Donald spent much of his career in the construction industry. Over time, both the challenges of making a living in California and the decline in overall quality of life led them to consider a change. That opportunity came unexpectedly when one of Donald’s longtime clients expressed interest in investing outside of California and asked him to take a look at a property in Mitchell.
Until that phone call, Mitchell wasn’t even on their radar. But once Donald visited, he signed on to manage what was initially planned as a four-year restoration project. That project quickly grew, from one property to nine, and what started as a temporary stay has now turned into their sixth year in Mitchell.
Their first impressions of the town left a lasting mark. Rochelle describes Mitchell as having a “gentleness”, both in the people and the place itself. Donald agrees, noting the Midwest charm, slower pace of life, and the absence of unnecessary stress. In Mitchell, people embrace life while still getting the job done, and that balance stood out immediately.
When asked what they enjoy most about living in Mitchell, Rochelle’s said everything. For Donald, it’s the people. The sense of openness and connection has made it easy for them to feel at home.
Donald and Rochelle are very involved in the community. From First Fridays to the Palace City Pre-Sturgis Party and many events in between, they participate whenever they can. Their work keeps them closely connected with the City of Mitchell, the Chamber, and Mitchell Main Street, organizations they strongly support. Donald jokes that in Mitchell, saying goodbye after a conversation often means committing to another 45 minutes of talking, proof of how welcoming and sociable the community is.
Food has also been part of their Mitchell experience. They’ve tried and enjoyed every local restaurant they’ve visited and find it impossible to pick a favorite.
Outside of work, both Donald and Rochelle enjoy music, golf, and fishing. One thing they are passionate about is Main Street Mitchell. They are strong advocates for the preservation and restoration of the town and see Mitchell as the perfect example— “the poster child,” as Donald puts it.
When it comes to favorite places and experiences, the list is long. Must-visit locations include the Corn Palace, the Prehistoric Indigenous Archaeological Site and Museum, and the lake. Local events are equally memorable—parades, Corn Palace Festival, Oktoberfest, and more. In their eyes, almost anything that happens in Mitchell is worth celebrating.
For those considering a move to Mitchell, Donald offers advice that reflects their outlook on life: “No matter where you go, where you end up. Life’s an adventure—leave the baggage behind, adapt to the new environment, and enjoy the ride.”
Donald and Rochelle’s story is one of unexpected opportunity, deep community connection, and a genuine love for their new home. Mitchell isn’t just where they work, it’s where they belong.
